Course Outline
A one-day continuing education event which focuses on helping clinicians and diabetes educators learn approaches to therapeutic decision making and counselling in diabetes management. This year’s course has a major emphasis on an interdisciplinary approach to diabetes management. The format includes plenary lectures followed by smaller, concurrent sessions with case studies and interactive touch-pad questions. Participants will have the opportunity to attend one concurrent session in the morning and one concurrent session in the afternoon.
Course Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Understand and use newer therapies effectively in the management of Type 2 diabetes
- Be aware of the potential improvements in managing diabetes using continuous glucose sensing and insulin pumps in a future closed loop system
- Counsel about and/or prescribe therapies for peripheral diabetic neuropathies and gastroparesis
- Learn which patients are appropriate candidates for referral for bariatric surgery, and about the nutritional, psychological, medical and surgical implications of this intervention
- Understand how an interdisciplinary approach can help the adolescent with poor glycemic control
- Counsel about the appropriate use of cardiovascular risk factor modification strategies
- Be aware of the how gender affects the management of diabetes
- Counsel about carbohydrate counting and the use of nutrition in the management of diabetes
- Counsel and/or prescribe insulin therapies best suited for the patient
- Counsel and/or manage women with gestational diabetes

Physicians, dietitians, nurses, pharmacists, diabetes educators, medical residents and students, and other allied health care professionals.
